Costa Rica Finca La Amistad
Costa Rica Finca La Amistad
Located in southern Costa Rica near the border with Panama, Finca Amistad is one of the oldest certified organic coffee farms in existence. Abutting the vast and pristine Parque Internacional La Amistad, Central America's largest forest reserve, the farm is beautifully situated and benefits from this protected habitat.
Coffee has been grown in this area by the Montero Zeledon family for over 100 years. In the late 1980s, Robero Montero, the 4th generation to manage the farm, made the radical decision to farm organically. With a firm commitment to the environment, all harvested coffee is both wet and dry milled on the farm from energy provided by hydropower generated from farm stream flow. All processing wastes are returned to the farm as compost. Additionally, nearly all of the coffee grown is covered in shade trees, qualifying the farm to obtain a Bird Friendly Shade Grown certification from the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Council (SMBC).
